Our Families

Cooperative schools are organized for parents who want to be involved in their child’s first educational experiences.  Hobson is a wonderful community for your family because of the combined efforts from parents and the professional teaching staff.  The time and energy that you give to Hobson is rewarding for your children and your family.  Visitors have sometimes wondered how much parent volunteer time is required.  Here is an overview:

Parent-Child Class (2-year olds)

A parent comes to each class with their child. One additional responsibility of the Parent-Child families is to purchase two tickets to Hobson’s annual Spring Social.

2-Day Class (3-year olds)

There are one or two parent volunteers in class each day.  The schedule gives each family equal opportunity to participate in the classroom. Parents are typically assigned to volunteer once every 4 weeks depending on the class size.  We ask parents to please arrange for childcare for siblings.  Because our community of families has the opportunity to get to know each other well, Hobson parents often swap childcare while they volunteer in class.  Parents’ work and personal schedules are also taken into consideration when creating the parent volunteer schedule.

3–Day Class (4- and 5-year olds)

There are one or two parent volunteers in class each day.  The schedule gives each family equal opportunity to participate in the classroom. Parents are typically assigned to volunteer once every 5-6 weeks depending on the class size.  We ask parents to please arrange for childcare for siblings.  Because our community of families has the opportunity to get to know each other well, Hobson parents often swap childcare while they volunteer in class.  Parent’s work and personal schedules are also taken into consideration when creating the parent volunteer schedule.

Additional responsibilities of the 2-Day, 3-Day, and 5-Day families include:

  1. Participating on a committee. As a cooperative, parents have the opportunity to be involved firsthand in the operations of the school.  Each committee position is important to the business and maintenance of the school. Hobson asks that one parent from each family devote between 10-20 hours to committee participation per year.  Hobson is truly grateful that many parents willingly devote more time to their committees.

Parents can request assignment to a particular committee of interest.  Certain positions are appointed and approved by the membership, while others are assigned through a random lottery process based on parents’ preferences.  If families have more than one child at Hobson, they are only asked to participate on one committee.

  2. One parent workday per year.  We tend to our beloved school house and grounds during workdays that are held on several Saturday and Sunday afternoons a year.  Each family is asked to participate in one per year. Each workday is a half day event and is another way to get to know the other families at Hobson while caring for our school.
  3. Purchasing two tickets to Hobson’s annual Spring Social.  Our annual Spring Social is a fun event for parents, alumni and friends of Hobson.  The evening includes a dinner,  silent auction, and live auction.
  4. Working one shift at either Hobson’s annual Bike & Sport Sale or Spring Social.  Bike & Sport Sale shifts are available during the sale and during donation drop-off times, and Spring Social shifts are available during the set-up time or during the event itself.

Hobson parents highly value the opportunity to be part of their children’s first school experience and take pride in their contributions to Hobson.  Through parent participation, Hobson becomes a true community for our families.
